Russell Athletic®: The Inventor of the Sweatshirt
How an American Football Idea Created a Garment for Generations
Few garments have shaped the worlds of fashion and sport as profoundly as the sweatshirt. Today, it is an essential part of teamwear, workwear, streetwear and casual fashion alike. Yet its origins are not found on the catwalk, but on the football field. And it is precisely here that the story of Russell Athletic®, widely recognised as the inventor of the modern sweatshirt, begins.
The Beginnings in Alabama
The story of Russell Athletic® began on 3 March 1902 in Alexander City, Alabama. It was there that 26-year-old Benjamin Russell founded the Russell Manufacturing Company. The first factory was modestly equipped with just ten sewing machines and eight knitting machines. Initially, the company produced knitted tops for women and children. What was already evident at that time, however, was Russell's innovative entrepreneurial spirit. His company continued to evolve and increasingly focused on sportswear production during the 1920s.
The Birth of the Sweatshirt
The real success story began in 1926. Benny Russell, the founder's son and a football player himself, had grown tired of the wool training shirts commonly used at the time. The garments were heavy, itchy and uncomfortable during physical activity. He suggested to his father that they develop a cotton training top instead. The idea was revolutionary. Cotton offered significantly greater comfort, better breathability and improved durability. This concept initially resulted in a cotton football training shirt. Then, in 1930, production of the first iconic crewneck sweatshirt began. An entirely new product category had been born.
Why the Sweatshirt Was an Innovation
Today, a sweatshirt may seem like an everyday garment. In the early twentieth century, however, it represented a genuine innovation. The sweatshirt developed by Russell stood out through:
The original crewneck sweatshirt also featured the distinctive V-insert at the neckline. This design element was intended to absorb perspiration while helping the collar maintain its shape. Even today, this feature can still be found on many classic sweatshirts.
- Cotton fabric instead of itchy wool
- Greater comfort during sporting activity
- Improved durability
- Enhanced breathability
- Suitability for both training and everyday wear

From the Sports Field to a Global Classic
What began as a solution for football players quickly became an established part of American sporting culture. Schools, colleges and universities adopted sweatshirts as part of their teamwear and campus apparel. Over time, the garment moved beyond sport and became a global symbol of comfort and casual style. Particularly in the United States, the sweatshirt became closely associated with sport and team spirit. Its success played a major role in helping Russell Athletic® grow into the largest manufacturer of sports apparel and team uniforms in the United States during the decades that followed.
More Than 120 Years of Innovation
The invention of the sweatshirt was only one chapter in the company's history. In 2002, Russell Athletic® celebrated its centenary. Today, the brand looks back on more than 120 years of expertise in developing high-quality apparel. Innovation, quality and versatility remain at the heart of everything it does.
Why This Story Still Matters Today
For organisations that use teamwear, the sweatshirt is far more than a comfortable piece of clothing. It represents unity, identity and a consistent appearance. This is precisely why it has remained one of the most popular garments in the corporate wear sector for decades. The fact that this versatile garment originated at Russell Athletic® underlines the brand's long-standing expertise in developing apparel for teams. What began on the football field now supports businesses, clubs, schools and organisations around the world. As the inventor of the sweatshirt, Russell Athletic® has made fashion and sporting history. From a simple idea designed to provide football players with greater comfort emerged one of the most successful garments of all time. More than 95 years after production of the first sweatshirt began, the brand still stands for the same values today: innovation, quality and a passion for equipping teams in the best possible way.
